Have you ever considered choosing a guiding “Word of the Year”? Many people, including myself, choose to select a word that will be their life theme in the New Year. Having one word to describe what we want to DO or BE for the year gives us focus and helps us take positive steps to “flourish” in life and to keep going and keep growing.
When choosing a Word of the Year consider what is most important to you. What do you most want to concentrate on in the New Year? Do you need more positivity in your life? Do you want to practice gratitude more intentionally? Do you want to focus on have a more balanced life? Your word only has to be meaningful for you. You will find that choosing a personal, motivational word will ground you, giving you something to refer to every day.
For example, my word of the year for 2021 was “renew”. In 2020 I lost my sister and mother one month apart, then my ex-mother-in-law and a close family friend. All in a 3-month span and none were COVID related. Then around the holidays I was sick with COVID and it took almost 6 weeks for me to completely recover. By the end of 2020 I was drained physically, spiritually, and emotionally. That’s not how I want to live my life, so I chose the word RENEW as 2021 began. My coordinating scripture (I usually have one that goes with my WOTY) was Ephesians 4:23 “Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.” I referred to my word and scripture many times during 2021 and slowly but surely regained physical, spiritual, and emotional wellness.

Once you have decided on your word of the year, find ways to keep it in front of you each day. Come up with ideas on how to incorporate your word into your daily life. Make it tangible. Find or make a graphic with your word and include your coordinating scripture if you choose one. Find a coffee mug with your word on it. Keep on the lookout for anything the has your word on it. Collect quotes that include your WOTY. Set some goals with your word in mind. Whatever word you choose, make it part of your journey every day.
